Former Prime Minister of France René Viviani came to Mount Vernon on April 29, 1917 as French Minister of Justice and a member of the British & French War Commissions for World War I. In his speech, Viviani noted that “On this spot meet the admiration of the whole world and the veneration of the American people. At this solemn hour in the history of the world, while saluting the final victory of Justice, I send to the Republic of the United States the greetings of the French Republic.”
