Before requesting a research appointment, we request that you do a preliminary search of our catalogs to make sure we have relevant materials for your project. We require at least 48 hours notice for any appointments to view rare materials.

Tour Policy:

We are not open for public tours, or included in admission to the Mount Vernon Estate. To see some original documents from our collection, visit the Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center, which is included in your admission.

Access to non-digitized rare materials is subject to purpose of research and preservation needs.

Research Library

To schedule a research appointment please fill out the form below. Any research or reference questions can be sent to [email protected].

We do not have extensive materials related to the genealogy of the Washington, Custis, Ball, or allied families.  Please contact the Library of Virginia, or the National Society of Washington Family Descendants for lookups and verification of potential familial connections. Please contact the Daughters of the American Revolution Library for more information on ancestors who fought in the Revolutionary War.
