About the Reenactment

In August 1824, the Marquis de Lafayette, a celebrated hero of the American Revolution, made his first return to the United States in forty years. Over the next 13 months, he traveled across the new nation, receiving a warm welcome from thousands of admirers at each stop.

Although the tour took him to every state in the Union, he spent most of his time in Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Maryland.

During this tour, the Marquis de Lafayette stopped at Mount Vernon to visit George Washington’s Tomb to pay his respects to the man he developed a special bond with during the American Revolution.
