Thomas Jefferson initially drafted this bill for the Virginia General Assembly House of Delegates in 1777, but it wasn't passed until 1786, nearly seven years later. The Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom was a monumental document, setting the precedent for religious freedom by inspiring the First Amendment in the U.S. Constitution through the Bill of Rights
