Preserving an 18th-century structure such as the Mansion requires an extraordinary blend of historical expertise, engineering ingenuity, and skilled craftsmanship. As part of the Mansion Revitalization Project, one of the most complex and visually striking preservation efforts has been the cantilever shoring system—a feat of structural stabilization designed to hold the Mansion in place while crucial repairs are undertaken.
In this video, created during a tour of Mount Vernon with C-SPAN, Director of Preservation Tom Reinhart explains the principles behind cantilevered shoring and how the technique is being used during the Mansion Revitalization Project.
