The East Front View Ornament
“Towards the East of the Mansion Nature has lavished its magnificence, nor has Art interfered but to exhibit her to advantage … Down the steep slope trees and shrubs are thickly planted . They are kept so low as not to interrupt the view but merely to furnish an agreeable border to the extensive prospect beyond. The mighty Potowmac runs close under this bank the elevation of which must be perhaps 250 feet.”
Coming from America’s leading professional architect, Benjamin Henry Latrobe’s picturesque description of the east front of George Washington’s Mount Vernon was certainly high praise. Like many admirers of the first president, Latrobe had made his own pilgrimage to Mount Vernon in the summer of 1796 to see the majestic Mansion, to tour the well-kept gardens, and of course, to spend time with the most famous man in
America – George Washington.
This hand-crafted 24kt gold finish ornament shows the east front view of the Mansion, circa 1792, and serves as a year-round reminder of what Washington once called “the most pleasantly situated estate in United America.”
This ornament measures 2 ½” x 3 ½” high.
