The West Front View Ornament
“As to the house it is a country residence, the handsomest I have seen in America, it is symmetrically built and has two stories, counting the false roofs, wherein some pretty chambers have been constructed. All the rooms are furnished with taste.” Claude Blanchard, 1782.
The lure of Mount Vernon was a powerful magnet in the eighteenth century. Hundreds of admirers, foreign and domestic, routed their travel plans overland by horseback or in boats along the blue ribbon of the Potomac River to arrive at Mount Vernon and to catch a glimpse of its celebrity owner, George Washington.
Shown in front of the Mansion is the Powel Coach, a superb example of an 18th century American coach that is displayed in the stable at Mount Vernon.
This beautiful hand-crafted 24kt gold finish ornament shows the west front of the Mansion, circa 1792, and serves as a year-round reminder of what Washington once called “the most pleasantly situated estate in United America.”
This ornament measures 2 ½” wide x 3 ½” high.
