MOUNT VERNON, Va. – Mount Vernon invites Washington, DC, area teachers to attend a free two-day institute on July 21 and July 22 at the historic home of George Washington. The seventh annual George Washington Teachers’ Institute for Washington, DC, teachers, funded by Jack and Jackie McDonnell of McLean, VA, gives area educators an opportunity to meet and listen to noted historians and authors such as Woody Holton, John Kaminiski, Harlow Unger, Ken Bowling, Linda Monk and Catherine Allgor. ABC political commentator and author Cokie Roberts will moderate a panel titled “Establish a Nation: The Constitution.” on July 22. In addition to these special speakers, teachers will receive a tour of Washington family objects led by Mount Vernon curators, visit an excavation site on the Estate with Mount Vernon archaeologists, and meet first person characters such as Patrick Henry and Silla, a slave who lived and worked at Mount Vernon. Participating teachers may also attend Mount Vernon’s History Teacher of the Year Award ceremony, supported through an endowment by the Robertson Foundation, followed by a private cocktail reception and book signing overlooking the Potomac River.

Admission fees, restaurant and retail proceeds, along with private donations, support the operation and restoration of Mount Vernon.
