In 1787, George Washington paid 18 shillings to bring a camel to Mount Vernon to entertain his guests. Now you can come to Mount Vernon and meet Aladdin, our very own Christmas Camel.
A 1787 Camel Visit
"By the man who brot. A Camel from Alexa. For a show. . . ."
These limited words found in George Washington's expense ledger are the only surviving mention of a camel's visit to Mount Vernon for Christmas in 1787.
Care and Feeding of Aladdin
Aladdin has been Mount Vernon's visiting camel every holiday season since he was eleven months old. Mount Vernon's Livestock Team works closely with Aladdin's owner to ensure his health and happiness during his visits.
